A Centennial Festschrift: Introduction
By Charles Peltz

Gunther Schuller was a scholar as well as a composer, conductor and instrumentalist. His comprehensive and expertly researched books on Jazz are foundational texts in music history. His myriad insightful books, articles and essays, written in his own engaging and forthright style, have added much to our understanding of music.

This Centennial Festschrift is a collection of articles solicited by the Schuller Society to continue his legacy of important scholarly contributions. We sought out experts in the many fields in which Gunther worked and asked them to honor Gunther’s anniversary by adding new information and perspective on his work:

Dr. Helen Greenwald discusses opera, Dr. Brian Levy addresses a controversial approach in jazz criticism (in progress), Joseph Horowitz offers a personal/cultural reflection, David Reffkin reflects on a first-person sojourn in The New England Ragtime Ensemble, George Mathew reviews Gunther’s approach to the teaching of conducting (in two parts) and Dr. Susan Calkins presents an important overview of Schuller – as – educator.
